The “Five Stages of Grief” model may not be entirely accurate, but I’m bargaining like hell right now. Perhaps it’s just denial. The Grandcamp is on fire and somehow I’m imagining it’s just another fire. And I still think there simply has to be some little switch that saves the day. Isn’t there a little switch?
By Wednesday afternoon lots of people were feeling the same way and saying there really is a little switch, the Electoral College. Technically, electors don’t have to vote in accord with their State’s vote. Some states have tried to legally bind their electors to the state vote, but it’s not clear states have this authority, and in any case, there are plenty of electors in states with unbound electors to save the day. And if you are one of those constitutional Originalists there’s plenty of evidence that part of the reason there’s an Electoral College is that it might intervene in situations like this. Even so, it’s probably just bargaining and denial to think that the Electoral college would overturn what is coming to be an increasingly accepted outcome.
But I still want my little switch that stops it all from happening. I see lots of quotes from Hamilton’s Federalist 68. No one seems to be quoting what I think is the most relevant part:
Nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption. These most deadly adversaries of republican government might naturally have been expected to make their approaches from more than one querter, but chiefly from the desire in foreign powers to gain an improper ascendant in our councils. How could they better gratify this, than by raising a creature of their own to the chief magistracy of the Union?
Here, Hamilton is saying that the Electoral College could serve as a line of defense against a foreign conspiracy to elect a President. It’s clear the Russians are involved. No one seems to care much, and Donald Trump hasn’t tried to hide it very well. Ivanka Trump even posted this picture of herself with Wendi Deng, Putin’s girlfriend and Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife.
Maybe there will be some stronger evidence about Russian intervention, something so obvious that the Electoral College will stop Trump. I think we need to look into Ivanka, rather than Donald. She’s the brains of this operation. I have said several times here on The Board that the Cold War isn’t really over. I’d hate to see it end with a Russian victory.
But Russian victory it will likely be. Well played, Vladimir. поздравления!
Music for These Times:
I can’t think of anything that expresses shock and confusion like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. The song is in part about the specific concerns of the African-American community at the time it was written. Those concerns are still relevant today and will become more relevant in the Trump years. But this isn’t really happening. Right?
