Many of you may remember Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. What you might not know is that Jim Steinman wrote that song a few years before it became a hit as part of an intended musical about vampires. The pitch for the musical fell through, so Steinman pitched a couple of the songs to Meat Loaf. I think Meat Loaf could have recorded a very good version, but he declined to record it and pitched it to Bonnie Tyler. She accepted and the rest is history.
Steinman never gave up on his dream of a vampire musical. He failed in London in spite of his song having topped the UK charts. But he found success in Hamburg, and later the rest of West Germany. And wow, just watch this:
Nena lost something in the translation from German to English, but I think Total Eclipse gained something in the translation.
